Windows 10 is being retired — what you need to know

Microsoft will officially retire Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. After that date it will stop receiving regular security updates, which means it will gradually become less secure over time. Many people will continue using Windows 10 for a while, but it's worth planning ahead if you can.

Do I need a new computer?

Some older PCs cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. If that applies to you, the safest long-term option is to move to a new computer, but you don't have to do it immediately.

  • If you're not ready to upgrade right away, you can continue using Windows 10 for now — just be extra careful about suspicious emails and avoid clicking unknown links.
  • If you're thinking about a new machine, any new Windows PC sold today (or a refurbished one running Windows 11), or a Mac running a recent version of macOS, will work fine with your mail.coop account.
  • If cost is a concern, refurbished PCs from reputable suppliers can be a good, affordable option (prices typically start from around £200–£300).

Setting up email on a new PC

On a new computer you'll need to add your mail.coop account to your chosen email program. We provide step-by-step guides for the two most popular options:

Both use the standard IMAP protocol, which means your messages, folders, and sent items will re-appear automatically once you sign in with your email address and password.

You can always use webmail

Even on an older computer, you can access your mail.coop account safely using a web browser. Just go to:

https://mail.mail.coop

This works on any PC, Mac, tablet, or phone — no setup needed. Your browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) will still receive security updates even if Windows 10 doesn't, so webmail remains a safe option.

Checking for local mail

Most users are already on IMAP, so all mail is stored safely on our servers. However, if you have ever used POP instead, some messages may be saved only on your old computer. Signs you may be using POP include:

  • Older emails are visible on your computer but not when you log in to webmail.
  • Your old email program talks about "downloading" or "removing" messages from the server.

If you think this applies to you, it's important to copy or export those messages before retiring the old PC. Our Thunderbird setup guide includes step-by-step instructions for moving local mail, or you can contact support for help at yourcoopemailsupport@midcounties.coop / 01608 434 000.

What if I can't get a new computer right away?

You can continue using Windows 10 after October 2025 — it won't suddenly stop working. However, without security updates, it's important to:

  • Keep your antivirus software up to date (if you have it).
  • Be extra cautious with emails — don't click links or open attachments unless you're certain they're safe.
  • Avoid using the PC for online banking or shopping if possible.
  • Use webmail in your browser (https://mail.mail.coop) rather than a locally installed email program — this keeps your email access more secure.

Summary

Windows 10 is being retired in October 2025, but you don't need to panic. If you're ready to upgrade, a new or refurbished PC will work perfectly with your mail.coop account — just set up Outlook or Thunderbird and your mail will appear. If you're not ready yet, you can keep using your current computer, but take extra care with online security. And remember: you can always use webmail in a browser on any device.
